Ruben Moutinho

Portuguese industrial designer and researcher whose practice moves between human-centred design, technology, material experimentation and object-making. His work explores the relationship between people, objects and emerging technologies, translating research and technical complexity into tangible experiences, products and new forms of interaction.

With a background in Product Design and experience across medical devices, advanced engineering and research, he currently works as a Researcher and Industrial Designer at Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS, where he develops and investigates human-centred technologies through design, prototyping and experimentation.

Alongside this research-driven practice, Moutinho develops experimental work at the intersection of design and contemporary object-making. Through material transformation, prototyping and hands-on processes, he investigates how form can emerge from the negotiation between intention, gesture, matter and chance. Rather than understanding the object as the execution of a predetermined form, his practice considers making itself as a way of thinking — allowing materials, processes, imperfections and unexpected behaviours to participate in the construction of meaning.

Across both research and independent practice, his work approaches design not only as a means of solving problems, but as a way of questioning how objects are conceived, made, experienced and transformed.
